A helpline for vulnerable homeowners has urged people to seek help on how they can best access cheap energy, reports thisishampshire.net.
Homeowners on low incomes who have young children can seek advice from the Home Heat Helpline on how to tackle price rises from energy suppliers, as can homes with disabled or elderly occupants.
People struggling with bills could get assistance from their energy supplier or they might be eligible for free or discounted insulation.
Sian Lloyd, best known as a TV weather presenter, told the website: "Unfortunately, those who most need help with their gas and electricity bills this winter often find it hardest to find out what practical help is available."
She added that if energy suppliers are made aware of problems a customer is having, then arrangements could be made to make sure they do not have their electricity or gas cut off.
The number of fuel poor households in the UK is thought to have climbed past five million as the result of a succession of price rises last year.
