More homeowners could access lower prices from energy suppliers if the government commits to a £30 billion green spend, reports an expert body.
According to the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), a green New Deal could be introduced, with money spent on domestic energy efficiency, low-carbon transport and the more widespread use of renewable energy.
The organisation went on to say that over £15 billion of the investment would take just a few years to recoup and more than 800,000 jobs could be created, stimulating the economy during the recession.
Tim Jackson, economics commissioner at the SDC, said: "The government itself has made it clear that there is no high-carbon future and that the transition to a low-carbon economy is an environmental and economic imperative."
The Department of Energy and Climate Change acknowledged the need for rapid action and said the government will be revealing its strategy in the summer.
New figures from Deloitte reveal that nearly 70 per cent of UK businesses have energy-efficient strategies in place as they pursue a reduced carbon footprint, reports the Birmingham Post.
