French energy firm EDF has called for energy suppliers to increase Britain's nuclear capabilities.
EDF UK chief executive Vincent de Rivaz stated that companies should be looking to fill the skills gap by maximising the potential of nuclear energy generation, Building.co.uk reports.
"The opportunities for your businesses - for employment, for the experience that the UK can sell in a growing worldwide marketplace - are huge," Mr Rivaz told the news source.
"If the conditions are right and we get all the necessary consents, EDF will be doing it and we plan to do it first," he added.
EDF is set to oversee a new nuclear site in Somerset in 2013 and is looking for the support of Britain's energy suppliers to develop that foundation.
Meanwhile, British Gas plans to install new smart meters in UK homes to monitor energy consumption.
Like many energy suppliers, the company is looking to slash its carbon emissions, a goal that the new meters could achieve by abolishing estimated bills and allowing consumers to more closely regulate their gas use.
