The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) has called for a ban on salespeople making door-to-door calls to convince people to switch their energy supplier.
Many homeowners feel pressured into signing up when a salesperson knocks on their door, with more than 1,200 calls made to Consumer Direct over the past six months complaining they have been misinformed by an agent in one way or another, reports the Mirror.
The National Pensioner's Convention is supporting the TSI's call, as older people are particularly vulnerable to aggressive sales techniques for energy contracts that may not be in their best interests.
Peter Denard, TSI chair and head of Surrey county council trading standards, told the paper: "Salesmen work on commission and we find that they will say whatever it takes to get a contract signed. Surrey now says that enough is enough and we are going to make the salesmen and the companies they work for fully accountable."
The number of households living in fuel poverty is thought to have risen since major price increases were implemented in 2008.
