Cheap energy Scottish wind farms to sell electricity to grid - 01/09/2009

Homeowners looking to compare energy prices in Orkney could be interested to learn that two wind farms are being set up in the region.

In two separate projects, turbines are being established on Westray by a community-led firm and also by a private family company at Dounby. Both projects will use 900kW turbines and have agreed deals to sell electricity to independent energy supplier SmartestEnergy.

Iain Robertson, SmartestEnergy's business development manager for Scotland, said: "Orkney has some of the best renewable resources in the UK and we are proud to be able to help the local people benefit from them."

He added that the company is happy to help the local projects take advantage of the renewable opportunities available in the region.

The government in Westminster recently announced plans to escalate the development of offshore wind farms around the UK coast in order to pursue legally-binding European Union targets more effectively.

The UK is committed to generating 15 per cent of its national electricity demands from renewable sources by 2020.
