A programme designed to harness tidal power from the Mersey Estuary - something which could help to provide a sustainable source of cheap energy to the region - has reached a key milestone, it has been claimed.
A comprehensive feasibility study into the possible development has been launched by Peel Energy and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
The NWDA states that a large scheme could provide enough energy to meet the needs of a "significant proportion" of the homes within the Liverpool city region.
Chief executive of the NWDA Steven Broomhead said: "As one of the region's natural assets, the Mersey Estuary presents a number of options for sustainable energy, providing a further source for renewable energy."
Development director at Peel Energy Anthony Hatton added that the support already generated for the scheme highlights the desire to harness the energy resource offered by the Mersey.
Earlier this month, the chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum John Barwise argued that the UK currently needs to catch up with other nations in terms of harnessing green energy technologies.
