New energy suppliers undercut competition - 28/09/2009

Homeowners looking to switch energy companies in pursuit of cheaper tariffs could turn to either one of two new firms offering competitive rates.

First Utility has claimed a position as cheapest UK supplier with an online tariff that is almost £280 a year cheaper than the market average, while Ovo Energy is slightly more but 15 per cent of its energy is sourced from renewable means, reports the Guardian.

This could be a particular appeal for customers eager to reduce their domestic emissions and their wider carbon footprint, while also accessing savings at home.

The major established energy companies have all lowered their prices in recent months, but have faced intense criticism for failing to match the scale of price rises implemented throughout the course of last year.

In addition, prices were not lowered until after the freezing winter months earlier this year.

Buying an energy tariff on the internet and choosing to pay by direct debit is often the cheapest way of securing an energy contract.
