Consumers need to be made aware of the benefits of using renewable technology to generate cheap energy, it has been suggested.
According to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), the government needs to continually highlight the various advantages of fitting devices such as solar panels and wind turbines in people's homes.
If consumers are made aware of the various options open to them, they will be able to compare energy providers and switch to options that fit in with their lifestyles.
Andrew Leech, director of the NHIC, said incentives for using renewable energy are most likely to make people switch to more sustainable energy sources.
"I think it certainly will make the public look more at improving their homes and putting renewable technologies in them, especially as they are going to be able to gain some money back as a result of their investment," he said.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently announced plans to allow households that install eco-friendly technologies to claim payments for the low carbon electricity they produce.
