Many consumers suspect that energy suppliers are not passing on full price reductions despite a fall in wholesale prices.
According to Mark Todd, director of independent price comparison website energyhelpline.com, consumers are suspicious that they are not benefitting from the appropriate cheap energy prices - and this is strengthened by feedback from Ofgem.
The energy regulator announced last week that energy suppliers' profit levels per customer are at record levels.
Mr Todd conceded, however, that the profits levels, such as those recently announced by Centrica, may be something consumers need to get used to given the huge investments needed in the energy infrastructure.
"What customers have to remember is that British Gas has two primary purposes: firstly, to supply gas and electricity and secondly to make money," he said.
"So although unpalatable for some, these profits are the price we pay in today's commercial energy market."
Mr Todd added that people can still make significant savings if they compare energy providers and switch to cheaper options. Consumers could save over £300 a year by opting for non-standard deals such as online and fixed price.
