Consumers urged to switch energy tariffs amid price hike fears - 25/06/2010

Energyhelpline.com has renewed its calls for customers to switch energy deals to fixed tariffs amid concerns of prices rises.

Over the last ten weeks, the wholesale price of gas has risen by 45 per cent, while wholesale electricity prices for this summer and winter have gone up by 30 per cent over the same period.

Energy suppliers are expected to pass on this rise in wholesale gas and electricity to their customers, resulting in higher household bills.

However, if customers switch energy tariffs to fixed deals, they can protect themselves against any sudden price hikes.

Mark Todd, co-founder of energyhelpline.com, said: "As fixed rates ebbed at their lowest level for two years, a few weeks ago we urged consumers to take a gamble by fixing the price of their gas and electricity amid signs energy prices are beginning to rise again."

The current one-year fixed rate, based on average consumption, E.ON's FixOnline V8, is due to be discontinued in the foreseeable future, the company recently confirmed.
