News that Ofgem is looking into energy suppliers' price hikes has been welcomed by an MP.
Sir Alan Beith, who represents Berwick, wrote to the industry watchdog to ask for an investigation after ScottishPower announced a price rise of 19 per cent for cheap gas users and ten per cent for electricity rates, to come into effect next month.
He told the Morpeth Herald: "I am glad the regulator has acted on my request for an inquiry, but this is just the first stage and it must show it has teeth to back that up.
"Pensioners and hard-working local families across Northumberland cannot afford a 19 per cent price rise - it is obscene when the energy companies are making such huge profits," he added.
Meanwhile, British Gas parent company Centrica has hinted that the company will be putting its own prices up soon because of volatile global energy markets and rising wholesale costs.
