News that one of the Big Six energy suppliers has signed a pledge to stop its smart meter installers selling other products to cheap energy customers while on a job has been welcomed by Consumer Focus.
Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at the watchdog, explained that npower's move to comply with Which?'s 'no selling, just installing' smart meter challenge will provide more reassurance to customers.
"People often feel pressured to buy when sold to in their own homes, so this step sends a clear message that the firm wants to act responsibly to make the roll-out work for their customers. We would urge other suppliers to follow suit," she said.
Ms Gallacher noted that the government has listened to householders' concerns and will take steps to ensure sales and marketing around smart meters will only be carried out with consumer permission.
"However this is the minimum needed and success will depend on how well this is implemented by suppliers and monitored by the regulator," she added.
