Energy market 'has unaccountable concentration of power' - 16/09/2011

According to shadow energy and climate change secretary Meg Hillier, it is "sickeningly inevitable" that all of the Big Six energy suppliers have now raised their prices, leaving energy comparison customers to face a long, cold winter worried about how they are going to afford to heat their homes.

The Labour MP noted that hard-hit families "have nowhere to go" now that EDF has followed the example set by British Gas, Scottish and Southern Energy, ScottishPower, E.ON and npower and hiked its gas and electricity prices.

"The energy market is an example of an unaccountable concentration of power. Six energy companies control 99 per cent of the market," she pointed out.

"Ensuring the market is free and fair is vital if we are to bring bills down," the shadow minister added.

Meanwhile, National Energy Action has warned that the fuel poverty situation is as bad as it was in 1996, with millions of households unsure how they are going to afford to keep warm this winter.
