Mums invited to try out new smart meters - 01/03/2012

A group of members from the Britmums online community have been finding out how they can use smart meters to get cheap electricity from energy supplier British Gas.

The company invited the mums to its headquarters to get some hands-on experience with the technology as part of a scheme to highlight the benefits of the devices.

This involved a tour of the company's smart homes lab, where the devices are tested to discover their effects on a household's energy behaviour.

British Gas noted: "They were impressed by the increased control the meters gave as well as by the way the smart approach to energy had helped them start discussing energy issues with their children."

It previously claimed on the Britmums website the items could potentially cut bills by up to ten per cent by helping households understand more about how they use gas and electricity.

The company plans to roll-out the smart meters to all its customers, as it stated: "We feel they could transform the way we use energy".
