Many consumers think energy suppliers attempt to maximise profits at the expense of their customers.
This is according to a new report by YouGov SixthSense, which discovered 84 per cent of respondents are of this opinion.
A total of 56 per cent of people agreed the energy price cuts announced in February were overdue as providers make too much profit.
Furthermore, 59 per cent of respondents agreed that energy suppliers treat consumers with contempt.
YouGov SixthSense research director James McCoy said: "The findings suggest that many people are more outraged by the profits being made than by their actual energy bill."
He added that there is a great deal of "negativity of feeling" towards gas and electricity providers, which has been clearly demonstrated by the research.
