Individuals should not worry that plans to help people get cheap electricity from renewable sources will damage the British countryside, an industry body has stated.
Responding to a report last week from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), which warned many new developments may harm some of the country's most tranquil environments, RenewableUK said such fears are "misplaced".
The industry organisation stated the actual number of new installations planned for England is less than a sixth of the 12,000 turbines originally claimed by the CPRE.
Director of policy at RenewableUK Dr Gordon Edge said: "Onshore wind is the cheapest source of low-carbon power and restricting its development would jeopardise our firm commitment to offer value for money to the consumer, as well as green energy."
He added the best way to identify suitable locations is to assess each plan on its merits and not impose a top-down approach, as the CPRE has suggested.
