More needs to be done to explain to customers how they can get cheap energy through the use of smart meters.
This is according to managing director of British Gas Smart Homes Dean Keeling, who explained there are significant savings to be made from taking control of a home's gas and electricity usage with the devices.
However, he said: "There is no question that more needs to be done to help consumers understand the benefits."
Mr Keeling added that "smart meters have been the quiet revolution in the energy industry" and noted the time is right for energy suppliers to emphasise the advantages of the technology.
He noted British Gas is working hard to help customers "switch to smart" in order to take control of their household energy usage.
His comments come after a study by Consumer Focus revealed half of householders in the UK have not heard of smart meters, despite the fact a nationwide roll-out is scheduled to begin in under two years.
