CRC simplification 'will help businesses' - 06/07/2011

The simplification of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), announced by the government last week, will help business energy customers reduce their emissions.

John Barwise, chair of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, said the move shows the government has listened to the business community and made the CRC easier to understand and implement.

"There's a lot less red tape in the new proposals, and reducing the number of fuels covered by the scheme will also help," he pointed out.

"The proposed fixed price allowance should be less complicated for smaller companies, but we regret that this government insists on keeping the revenue raised through this carbon tax instead of using it to incentivise businesses to further improve energy efficiency."

Meanwhile, analysis by WSP Environment and Energy shows companies could offset the almost £500 million they are expected to spend on complying with the CRC this year simply by introducing some basic energy efficiency measures.
