More firms to focus on CRC next year - 06/12/2011

A growing number of business energy clients may look to improve the energy efficiency of their workplaces in order to get cheap electricity and cut their greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Michael Reid, senior associate at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, more firms will look to take up the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) in the near future.

"It is going to pick up for sure in April next year when the first allowances take place - that is obviously a real cost in people's pockets," he said, noting that people have tended to "bury their heads in the sand" up until now.

Mr Reid added companies may be able to take advantage of professionals who can advise them on how to register for the CRC scheme and administer it on a day-to-day basis, which could make it easier for enterprises to go green.

Last month, during the Department of Energy and Climate Change's annual statement, energy secretary Chris Huhne said it is important for the country to build confidence in how carbon emissions are measured.
