MP responds to cheap energy request from autism group - 23/04/2009
An autism group calling for relief from energy suppliers' high rates has received a personal response from an MP.
Joan Ruddock MP, the under-secretary of state at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, replied in a letter to the UK Autism Foundation (UKAF) giving her support to the organisation's appeal.
An early day motion on Autism and Winter Fuel Poverty has been signed by nearly 60 MPs and Ms Ruddock said that many vulnerable homes already receive benefits to help them pay their bills.
The MP acknowledged the hardships faced by families with disabilities and told the UKAF: "Fuel poverty is an issue which the government takes very seriously. We also appreciate the finance is an issue of great importance to people with a disability, including families with autism."
She added that many benefits are already available to help families affected by disability to cope with the pressure of climbing bills.
All the UK's major energy companies increased customer prices through the course of 2008, but have since implemented decreases.
