Cisco: Business energy prices can be reduced using IT - 13/11/2009

Businesses are going to be able to use IT systems to reduce their carbon emissions and switch energy practices, according to communications firm Cisco.

Nick Robinson, technical operation lead at the company, said IT is to play a crucial role in helping businesses track their energy consumption, which will become even more important when the carbon reduction commitment comes into effect next year.

Building management systems are to become integrated with a range of IT systems to enable businesses to improve their energy-efficiency and save money.

Speaking at Green IT Expo 2009, Mr Robinson said: "This technology is here today. It will have a massive impact on how buildings consume energy."

He added that the carbon reduction commitment is set to impact 5,000 businesses from the spring of next year, meaning they will need to monitor their energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases.

The scheme is designed to incentivise businesses throughout the UK to switch energy gas and electricity policies.
