Energy suppliers
EDF Energy have partnered with car manufacturer Toyota to launch a leasing programme of the eco-friendly Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car.
As part of the scheme, the electric cars will be leased to companies in London that are conscious about reducing business energy consumption and limiting carbon dioxide emissions.
Up to 20 PHEVs will be leased to five firms in the capital, while EDF Energy will set up car battery charging points on the street, at workplaces and at domestic locations.
Toyota believes that the scheme will give an insight into driver preferences and enable the government to obtain information about delivering infrastructure suitable for electric cars.
Martin Lawrence, managing director at EDF Energy, said: "Sustainability is at the core of our business and it is work like this that helps EDF Energy meet the climate change targets set out in our new sustainability commitments."
He also pointed out that the new coalition government has committed itself to a national recharging network for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
