Green Deal 'may not help poorer households' - 23/12/2010
Energy comparison customers might be interested to hear that the government has been called on to ensure its Green Deal goes to the least energy efficient homes.
A report by the New Local Government Network suggests that while aspects of the Green Deal, such as allowing homeowners to install energy efficient measures to the maximum value of £6,500, will work for some, for many of the 1.4 million social homes classed as 'hard to treat' the measures would cost more than would be saved in energy bills.
Report author Luke Hildyard commented: "The general principal of the Green Deal is a sound one, but the scheme's application in the social housing sector will be fraught with difficulties.
"Many low-income households cannot currently afford to heat their homes, so improved energy efficiency will not result in savings on their fuel bill," he noted.
Mr Hildyard suggested that a revised energy supplier obligation should be targeted at fuel-poor households that will not be able to benefit from the Green Deal.
