Cheap gas customers could be paying more than they have to when it comes to their boiler services, even when engineers trained by energy suppliers carry out the job.
This is the finding from Which?, after the consumer group completed an undercover investigation into boiler services and repairs.
The organisation asked ten engineers to service a boiler that had a disconnected lead, which should have been discovered and fixed in a matter of minutes.
However, four of the engineers failed to fully service the device, while a British Gas-trained professional did a thorough job but not until the third scheduled appointment.
Which? executive director Richard Lloyd commented: "Registered gas engineers should provide a professional service at a fair price, so it's inexcusable when corners are cut, faults missed and people are ripped off.
"People should ask their friends and family for recommendations when choosing an engineer and get quotes from different suppliers to get the best deal," he added.
