Extra funding announced for energy efficiency projects - 08/12/2011
People looking to compare energy suppliers to get a cheap electricity deal may be interested to hear the government has allocated an extra £30 million to help fund efficiency measures.
Of this, £10 million will go into a new Local Energy Assessment Fund, which will offer around 200 organisations - including parish councils, faith groups and development trusts - the chance to improve efficiency in their communities.
Successful applicants will receive around £50,000 to be used to assess the potential for improvements and invest in renewable energy projects.
The remainder of the cash will go towards boosting performance in public institutions such as schools and hospitals.
Energy secretary Chris Huhne said this is "great news" for the sector and added the community grants will help "spur an energy revolution at a local level".
Recently, the minister also highlighted the benefits to be provided by the introduction of the Green Deal scheme next year, which he said will put people "back in control of their bills".
