It has been claimed that while the introduction of smart metering systems may help bring cheap energy to consumers, they could also cause privacy issues.
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has claimed the roll-out of the initiative will allow large amounts of personal information about households to be collected.
Members of the European Union (EU) have been warned about the privacy threat ahead of a Europe-wide introduction of smart metering systems.
As a result of concerns over the ease at which data can be amassed, EDPS has called upon the European Commission to assess whether further legislative action is necessary.
EDPS recommends such action and claims there should at least be a mandatory requirement for controllers to conduct a data protection impact assessment.
Step-by-step guidelines are to be issued to EU member states regarding how to conduct cost-benefit analysis of implementing the new technology by September 3rd 2012.
