House-buyers 'should see home's energy bill' - 23/05/2011

In a bid to cut the cost of domestic energy for prospective homeowners, the Energy Saving Trust has called for estate agents to display properties' annual energy bills.

This makes it easier for house-buyers to understand how much their new home will cost to heat and power.

Fraser Winterbottom, chief operating officer, said: "Homes that are up for sale or rent should clearly show an average predicted annual running cost in the same way that new cars display miles per gallon in showrooms."

This may be particularly useful for buyers in the Scottish Lowlands, as research from energyhelpline.com shows properties here attract the biggest bills for gas and electricity of all UK regions.

Average annual costs for the supply of cheap gas and electricity stand at £1,192, compared with the cheapest region, South Wales, at £1,132.
