Individuals looking to compare gas providers may also like to look for a good heat cover deal in preparation for the winter.
Energy supplier npower noted that last year, it saw the number of broken boilers it dealt with increase by 80 per cent during December, which it said was a direct result of the extreme cold snap the UK experienced at the time.
Operations manager at the organisation Chris Thewlis therefore urged homeowners to take steps to protect their central heating system before the cold weather arrives.
He said: "Having your boiler serviced before a cold snap occurs could detect any small problem that might lead to a major disruption to your heating during a particularly chilly period."
It could also help save money on gas bills, according to regional services manager for E.ON Mark Emmett, as a boiler that is not working efficiently will use more fuel than necessary.
