Producing renewable energy from waste and purpose grown crops could help the UK to ensure it meets its renewable energy targets by 2020.
A new report by CentreForum claims the UK needs to "act fast" and "revolutionise" the way it develops power in order to achieve the 15 per cent goal within the next eight years.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has been described as an efficient and sustainable way to create energy.
The report's authors claim there is potential for the source to power 2.5 million households by 2020.
Secretary of state for energy and climate change Ed Davey said: "The government is committed to promoting an increase in energy from waste schemes through anaerobic digestion.
"CentreForum's report offers some interesting ideas for how this increase can be achieved."
