Major energy supplier EDF will be including the Sizewell B power station in its nuclear redevelopment plans and local businesses could benefit.
In its current form, the station generates £30 million in wages for the local community in east England, but redevelopment could boost business opportunities in the region, while also generating as many as 5,000 new jobs, reports Archant Regional.
Bob Blizzard, MP for Waveney, said that by focussing on both nuclear and renewable technology, the region has a real chance to become an energy hub within the UK.
Mr Blizzard told the news agency: "Our area is one that is at great risk from climate change and rising sea levels, but it is also one that can take advantage of the shift towards clean energy."
He added that advancements in renewable energy generation will be possible through the Orbis centre in Lowestoft.
The EDF takeover of nuclear supplier British Energy originally caused controversy as it places much of the UK's energy infrastructure under the influence of an organisation owned by the French state.
