Lack of cheap energy could be increasing East Anglia fuel poverty - 04/02/2009
A new report has found that the lack of cheap energy could be increasing the number of East Anglia households living in fuel poverty, reports edp24.co.uk.
The National Audit Office report found that while nearly 60 per cent of homes in the area are on the wrong benefits to be eligible for funds under the Warm Front scheme, three-quarters of homes receiving payments may not even be in fuel poverty.
Nearly £35 million may have already been spent on homes that already have cavity wall and loft insulation, in addition to further installations to improve their energy efficiency.
South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon told the website: "Unfortunately, it (Warm Front) is unintentionally giving the cold shoulder to many of those who are most in need of its help. The government needs to look again at how it decides eligibility for the scheme."
Joan Ruddock, the energy and climate change minister, said that matters could be improved but added that 1.8 million homes had been assisted towards cheap energy prices through payments for energy efficient measures.
The government has pledged to push energy efficiency on a nationwide level.
