Homes looking to switch energy companies could welcome Greenpeace efficiency plan - 01/04/2009

Homeowners looking to compare energy prices in search of the best deal may welcome new efficiency proposals from Greenpeace.

The environmental organisation commissioned a report from Impetus Consulting which has found an annual investment of £5 billion could help install widespread energy efficiency measures, leading to reduced fuel poverty and the creation of over 50,000 jobs.

Financial incentives and domestic energy MOTs are also suggested in the report, which has the support of the Liberal Democrats and organisations such as the Federation of Master Builders.

Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "Action taken now to insulate schools, hospitals and homes would create thousands of jobs, protect the environment and help families struggling to pay their fuel bills."

He added that money borrowed during the recession should be put towards establishing more carbon-neutral infrastructure.

Greenpeace criticised prime minister Gordon Brown's green policies and called for a more focussed push into nationwide energy efficiency programmes.

All the UK's major energy companies have reduced their prices in the last few weeks, but these decreases do not cancel out last year's rises.
