EST: Homeowners looking to switch energy companies could also save through efficiency - 23/06/2009
Around £340 could be trimmed from the average energy supplier bill each year if homeowners follow a few guidelines from the Energy Saving Trust (EST), reports the Telegraph.
Installing cavity wall insulation is one of the highest profile ways to reduce costs as nearly 35 per cent of domestic energy loss takes place when heat escapes this way. More than £800 million would be saved in the UK each year if every home with cavity walls was insulated.
Fitting an energy-efficient boiler cuts prices by around 30 per cent and could save £2 billion each year if every home in the country installed a modern condensing unit to replace older models.
Efficient fridge freezers and other white goods could also produce substantial savings as their collective annual energy usage in the UK surpasses £2 billion - buying an efficient unit could save nearly £40 on an annual basis.
Energy companies have been playing their part by sending out millions of energy-saving light bulbs, but they have also drawn criticism as this is the cheapest and shortest-term answer to the efficiency issue.
