Homeowners may be encouraged to switch energy companies as major supplier E.On has announced new customers will be billed monthly rather than quarterly.
The company says the new system will allow customers to budget their domestic outgoings more effectively and this could appeal to students getting new contracts as university autumn terms begin, but existing customers will still be billed on a monthly basis.
Many students signing up to the deal may choose to become one of the 40 per cent of E.On customers paying their bills by cheque, as this could make costs easier to divide among a student household.
Arranging to pay bills by direct debit on the internet remains one of the cheapest ways to cope with these outgoings, while sending customers billing information 12 times a year rather than four times a year could help achieve the financial transparency that the energy industry has recently been accused of lacking.
Customers could compare energy prices using comparison websites before signing up to a specific deal.
