'Window scrappage scheme' could encourage more people to compare energy rates - 04/11/2009
Prices from energy suppliers could be tackled more effectively and consumption reduced by implementing a window scrappage scheme, according to an expert organisation.
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GSF) has called for the scheme that would be modelled on that which has revitalised the auto industry in recent months, by offering discounts for homeowners installing energy-efficient windows (EEWs).
Technology such as double glazing can help retain heat within a home, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enabling homeowners to access cheap energy rates more easily.
Nigel Rees, chief executive of the GSF, said: "EEWs can reduce emissions by ten per cent from dwellings nationally and reduce national domestic energy expenditure by ten per cent."
Installing cavity wall and loft insulation can also help reduce bills and carbon emissions, while corporations could consider lowering their business energy costs by switching off non-essential electrical equipment overnight.
Switching to energy-saving light bulbs or LED lighting can also have a beneficial effect.
