ICE: Cheap energy barrage should be built across Mersey - 03/12/2009
A barrage should be built across the river Mersey as soon as possible as it could enable more people to switch gas and electricity companies, says the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).
According to the organisation, a barrage could prove hugely significant in developing the UK's renewable energy infrastructure and so a scheme being put forward by the Northwest Development Agency and Peel Energy should be adopted sooner rather than later, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Alan Butler, regional director of ICE, said the substantial tidal range of the Mersey Estuary makes it a good place to build a series of tidal machines that can harness that energy.
Mr Butler told the paper: "Energy infrastructure is one of the largest sources of emissions and without low-carbon choices available to them the public cannot make major changes to their individual contribution."
The planning application being developed by Peel Energy is due for completion in 2012 and ICE wants to have it operational by 2020.
