Consumers urged to switch energy providers - 01/03/2010
One of the ways consumers can "hit back" at energy suppliers enjoying huge profits is to switch energy providers, it has been claimed.
According to the Daily Mail, 12 million households do not bother to compare energy providers even though the internet has made it easier than ever before to switch gas or electricity suppliers.
Mark Todd, managing director at energyhelpline.com, stressed that it only takes six weeks for a transfer to be completed.
"You should get two weeks' notice of the switch and the date to do your final meter readings," he said. "This way you can be sure your final bills are accurate."
Consumers were also urged to consider switching to smaller and less well known energy suppliers such as First Utility, which has undercut many of the larger providers and offers customers smart meter technology.
Smart meters attach to existing gas and electricity meters to give an exact reading of usage, which is sent back to the energy supplier.
