Cheap energy plans given support - 30/03/2010
Plans for the development of new ways to access cheap energy through the use of smart technologies have been given extra support from the government.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change has given grants to a number of companies to consider ways to improve the use of energy supplies through schemes such as smart metering and the development of a smart grid.
Projects could also include the development of entire smart cities, the government department suggested.
Minister for energy and climate change Lord Hunt said: "Smart technologies will help manage the massive shift to low carbon electricity such as wind, nuclear and clean fossil fuels."
He added that their development would pave the way for delivery of electricity in a more efficient and reliable manner, further helping to reduce emissions from electricity generation.
Lord Hunt also suggested that the development of new smart systems would help to boost the country's economy, noting that the development of smart grids has been estimated at £27 billion globally over the next five years.
