New GE light bulbs could help consumers reduce bills from energy suppliers - 12/04/2010
Global infrastructure company GE Lighting has unveiled a new cheap energy efficient light bulb that is designed to help consumers save money from their energy suppliers.
The Energy Smart light-emitting diode bulb consumes just nine watts in electricity and saves 77 per cent in energy usage based on an equivalent 40-watt incandescent bulb.
The bulb has the same light output as its 40-watt equivalent but lasts more than 25 times as long and up to 17 years if used four hours a day.
According to GE, the new Energy Smart bulb produces 450 lumens - better than many bulbs on the market, which typically produce 350 lumens. The company also said the bulb is better at directing light downwards at a specific area.
John Strainic, of GE, said: "Consumers have been reluctant to move away from less efficient incandescent bulbs because they love the light quality. This new GE Energy Smart LED bulb will address that."
Prototypes of the bulb will be showcased at an upcoming industry trade exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany this year.
