Cheap energy saving light bulb scheme scrapped - 01/07/2010
The new government has scrapped a cheap energy scheme designed to promote efficient light bulbs.
The Carbon Emission Reduction Target scheme, which was launched in 2008, has seen over 330 million energy saving light bulbs distributed, although watchdogs say most of them have not been used.
Mailing out light bulbs has now been banned and the promotion of compact fluorescent light bulbs in supermarkets will be ruled out.
Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne said the next phase of the scheme, from March 2011 and December 2012, will focus on encouraging energy suppliers to use more effective ways to reduce energy wastage such as home insulation.
"This is the beginning of a massive and urgent increase in home energy insulation for the nation," Mr Huhne said.
"We are demanding that energy companies work harder to make homes warmer, more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run."
Mr Huhne added that the next phase of the Carbon Emission Reduction Target scheme will ensure that 3.5 million homes across the country are insulated.
