The recent price increase announcement from Scottish and Southern Energy could be the first of a tide of rate rises from energy suppliers, putting further pressure on consumers, a claim suggests.
Consumer Focus expressed concern that this price rise could be the first of many pieces of bad news for consumers.
"While we hope that other companies don't follow suit, history has shown us they adopt a pack mentality on pricing," said Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus.
She added that wholesale costs remain below their 2008 peak, prices consumers are required to pay for their domestic energy have not fallen by the same extent.
Ms Gallacher argued that it should be a priority for government to focus on tackling fuel poverty so that people are not adversely affected by domestic energy price increases.
Scottish and Southern Energy announced last week that its gas prices will increase from December 1st. Consumers hoping to avoid such an increase may be advised to seek out a more competitive deal and possibly switch gas provider.
