Landlords 'should discuss cheap energy issues with tenants' - 06/12/2010
Landlords who use energy comparison tools to find the best deal for their rental properties should work together with tenants to boost sustainability in the home, according to the British Property Federation (BPF).
The organisation's director of real estate policy, Ian Fletcher, commented that while there is no lack of activity regarding sustainability in the rental sector, the problem continues to be a breakdown in communications between landlord and occupier.
"Clearly it is one thing to be pursuing various initiatives, it is quite another to understand where your occupiers are coming from and seeking to support their efforts and their respects. That is the area that the industry is beginning to address," he pointed out.
His remarks come in light of GVA Grimley research, which found nine in ten (89 per cent) tenants were reported as being dissatisfied with their landlord's interaction with them on sustainability issues.
Over 40 per cent of occupiers also said their rental property owner had not got in touch over the last 12 months to discuss the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.
