Wind energy sector sees 91% increase in employment - 01/02/2011

Customers wishing to compare energy may be interested to hear that the UK's wind power sector has seen employment rise by 91 per cent in three years.

According to research from RenewableUK, the number of staff employed full-time on large-scale offshore and onshore green energy projects increased from 4,800 in 2007 to around 9,200 last year.

Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the organisation, commented: "Two conclusions from the results of this remarkable study are immediately obvious: this sector has withstood the negative GDP growth of the UK recession and bucked the overall employment trend in a spectacular way by a near doubling of the workforce.

"Furthermore, the increase in jobs has, to a large extent, mirrored the increase in electricity contributions from renewable sources, chiefly wind, to the grid," she pointed out.

The news comes after research from the European Wind Energy Association confirmed that the UK is the world leader in wind power, having installed 1,341 megawatts.
