Solar panels 'could provide free electricity for residents' - 06/06/2011
Domestic energy customers in West Hertfordshire could receive cheap energy from solar panels if council plans go ahead.
According to Hemel Today, Dacorum district councillors are considering installing solar panels on the roofs of around 5,000 council homes, so tenants could pay little or even nothing for their energy use.
Teaming up with Renewables East, the council could see the project generate up to £470,000 worth of cheap electricity a year, which would be free to use for residents.
Councillor Steve Holmes, cabinet chief for planning and regeneration, told the newspaper: "Dacorum would be among a very few district councils leading carbon reduction in this way."
However, a report from Renewables East said plans should be implemented quickly to take advantage of this year's government-guaranteed feed-in tariff rates, which could decline next April.
"If the council can move forward very quickly, within two to three months, Renewables East feel we may still be able to take advantage of this scheme," the report added.
