Local council to negotiate energy deals for residents - 03/11/2011

People in Lincolnshire who are looking to compare energy supplies to get cheap electricity and gas may be interested in a new scheme from one local authority in the area.

South Holland District Council has announced plans to negotiate directly with energy suppliers in order to get better deals for the 34,000 households it is responsible for, the BBC reports.

The authority believes it can use its large buying power to obtain discounts in order to offer savings to residents.

However, Hannah Mummery of Consumer Focus said it may be difficult to organise collective buying arrangements for domestic customers.

While such practices are common among large business energy clients with multiple sites, there are several problems with applying the idea to consumers.

"If you've got 34,000 households they've all got to buy into it, they've all go to agree for a certain amount of time," she explained.

Finding cheap gas and electricity by performing an energy comparison may be essential for many people, as a report by Deutsche Banke last month warned a quarter of homes could be in fuel poverty by 2015.
