Almost half of low-income families face 'heat or eat' choice - 05/01/2012
Many people on low incomes may wish to perform an energy comparison in order to find cheap gas and electricity deals in order to cope with rising prices.
A survey by Save the Children revealed a third of families with annual income below £12,000 say they will not be able to afford their energy bills this winter.
Over half say they are concerned their children's health will suffer due to cold homes, while 45 per cent said they have considered cutting back on food in order to meet costs.
However, just nine per cent will apply for the Warm Home Discount to help meet these costs, with many being unaware of the scheme.
Chief executive of the charity Justin Forsyth added the initiative needs additional funding from energy suppliers to ensure it is able to assist all those who are eligible.
"Without this help the choice for parents is stark: cut back on food, get into debt or risk their children's health because they can't afford to keep them warm," he said.
Recently, Citizen's Advice Scotland stated it has seen a large increase in the number of enquiries it received from people with concerns over their fuel bills.
