Energy suppliers need to do more to make their operations accessible to consumers if the UK is to make the transition to a low-carbon economy.
This is according to Conservative MP for South Thanet Laura Sandys, who said in an article for the Daily Telegraph providers need to abandon the use of complex jargon and explain their charges in easy to understand language.
"If we are to encourage consumers to save energy they need to know what a unit of electricity is. This must be translated into a human term," she said.
Ms Sandys said the language used by energy companies must reflect how electricity and gas is used, which will give individuals a better idea of their usage and help them make savings.
Under the current system, speaking in terms of unit prices and tonnes of carbon can often leave the consumer left out, the MP continued.
Recently, Ofgem also called for the way energy suppliers calculate their bills to be made more transparent, which may make it easier for people to perform an energy comparison.
