Seminar seeks to tackle fuel poverty in Scotland - 01/03/2012

Energy suppliers, consumer groups and local authorities in Scotland have discussed what can be done to reduce fuel poverty and help people get cheap gas and electricity.

Organised by Consumer Focus Scotland, the Making the Links seminar aimed to identify vulnerable groups and come up with a strategy to support them.

It took place as a direct result of a summit meeting in November between the government, industry and consumer groups about the high cost of domestic energy.

Chair of Consumer Focus Scotland Douglas Sinclair said: "It is absolutely vital that no stone is left unturned in getting help to vulnerable people."

He added trusted voluntary and public sector groups could play a crucial role in connecting members of the public with help that is available from the major energy providers.

Mr Sinclair observed: "Trust in energy companies is at an all time low and, worryingly, it is likely that thousands of vulnerable people are missing out on help to cut their fuel bills."

Also at the seminar, the Scottish government's cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital development Alex Neil confirmed the investment of an extra £2 million into the Universal Home Insulation Scheme and the boiler scrappage scheme.

He said Scotland is rich nation where no-one should have to face a choice between heating and eating, so it is vital the authorities do everything they can to minimise the impact of rising energy prices.

Mr Sinclair welcomed this, noting it is a step in the right direction for customers, though he warned there is still a large amount of work to be done.

The minister added this week's meeting will help drive forward this process, bringing together key players to ensure gas and electricity providers can deliver on their pledge to help vulnerable customers.

Recently, housing strategy manager at the Energy Saving Trust David Weatherall observed fuel poverty is one of the biggest social issues currently faced by the UK and it is essential government schemes such as the Energy Company Obligation are successful to help reduce the problem.
