South Lakeland District Council is set to launch a community energy scheme that will see an intermediary negotiate with energy suppliers over prices.
It is thought the programme could help save homeowners hundreds of pounds a year by ensuring they get the cheapest gas and electricity rates, the Westmorland Gazette reports.
Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson will launch the "collective switching project", which aims to help people to see how they could benefit from changing supplier.
Ms Feeney-Johnson said: "Some don’t switch because they are frightened of technology and others think their energy supply would stop for a period if they changed supplier."
The system is available to anyone in the borough and is expected to prove particularly beneficial for older and more vulnerable members of society.
Energy secretary Ed Davey recently called for councils to lead community switching initiatives in a bid to help those facing fuel poverty due to rising prices.
