Millions to be hit by energy price rises - 03/10/2011

Millions of people throughout the UK may see an increase in their gas and electricity prices this week as new tariffs are implemented.

As of Saturday (October 1st), the latest hikes from npower have come into effect, meaning those on a standard dual-fuel deal with the energy supplier will see their annual bills rise by £135.

Meanwhile, EDF Energy has axed its cheapest dual-fuel gas and electricity tariffs, making it the last of the Big Six providers to do this in recent months.

Individuals who have been affected by the moves were advised by Mark Todd, director of independent price comparison service Energyhelpline.com, to consider switching their energy deal in order to get a better price.

He said: "They can make a big difference to their household budgets by switching supplier or tariff. This tactic can save the average householder £310 a year for just a few minutes online or on the phone."
